Volunteering

Stones don’t move by themselves!

How long has it been since you last got your hands dirty? There are few things as satisfying as voluntary physical labour. Now you have the chance to participate in the restoration of walls and paved trails using traditional dry-stone-walling techniques.

Three good reasons

  • Make new friends
  • Work in wonderful open-air spaces
  • Know that your efforts will help preserve the cultural heritage of the region and make the world a better place to live in

Join El Cinquè Llac's "Volunteer Week" in May 2024 on the Trail from Vilella to Xerallo

Volunteer Week May 2024:

The Volunteer Week is a different way of spending your holidays and is all about lifting stones, building walls, laughing with new friends, sharing the satisfaction of a ‘good job well-done’, feeling part of something worthwhile, and being in touch with a land and its hundreds of years of history.

Dates: from May 27 to 31, 2024

Place: municipality of Sarroca de Bellera, Pallars Jussà

Every year the Association Marques de Pastor chooses a section of one of the old trails used by the El Cinquè Llac route. The aim is to restore the dry-stone walls and paved trails using the same traditional techniques with which they were originally built.

The walls are not only vital physical supports for the old trails and earth banks but are also interesting micro-habitats for a great variety of plants and insects and a fundamental part of our landscape.

For five days two expert dry-stone wallers will share their knowledge with a group of volunteers and show them how to place and fix stones without mortar using age-old techniques. The day’s work begins at 9:00 and ends at 17:00, with a lunch break in between. After work at 18:00 visits to natural spaces, museums and local producers are programmed.

After the five days of work, the results are extraordinary in all senses and show just how closely linked this type of work is to all the ideals and meanings contained in the word ‘gratitude’.
