Description
The Catalan donkey breed is in danger of extinction, and in our small family farm in Pallars Sobirà, in the municipality of Soriguera, we ensure that our animals are well cared for so that the breed can endure over time.
We have been working for 20 years on breeding and training this native Catalan breed, still little known and a national symbol of Catalonia, through the promotion and dissemination, both nationally and internationally, of the various qualities of this breed.
Objectives of the microreserve:
- Promote the qualities of this native Catalan breed and raise awareness about it.
- Promote actions for its conservation, encouraging its current skills and uses.
- Support fairs and events where the Catalan donkey is present.
Planned actions for the microreserve:
- Purchase an outdoor feeder for the donkeys to prevent the grass from getting wet.
- Provide support for the maintenance of a donkey for one year.
Why is it important to conserve this breed?
- Promote the biodiversity of domestic animals and the genetic heritage of Catalonia.
- Symbol of the subsistence economy in rural areas.
- A species of great economic value until the advent of agricultural machinery.
- In the past, a daily working animal essential to every family.
- A very hardy animal that was easy to maintain due to its ability to digest low-quality food.
- A mistreated animal, likely because its intelligence makes it take decisions that are difficult for humans to interpret and understand.
